QUOTES & SURVEYS
“The team from Urban Stone were here at 8:30, worked through the day, and by late afternoon we had a completely different garden. The kids were on it that same evening. Genuinely couldn’t fault any of it.”
— Sarah T., Berkshire
What Actually Is Artificial Grass?
Artificial grass — sometimes called synthetic lawn, fake grass, or even astroturf (though technically that’s a brand name) — is a manufactured surface designed to replicate the look and feel of a real lawn. The modern stuff bears almost no resemblance to the rigid, shiny plastic you might remember from the ’90s.
Today’s products use multiple shades of green, varied blade shapes, and a brown thatch layer that sits at the base to mimic the way natural grass actually grows. The fibres are typically made from polyethylene or polypropylene, both of which are UV-stabilised so they won’t fade over a few summers.
Why Homeowners Are Making the Switch
No More Weekend Mowing
No mowing, no strimming, no edging, no trips to the tip with bags of clippings. The odd brush and a rinse is all it takes.
Green Every Season
Stays the same colour in January as it does in July. No bare patches under the trampoline, no worn tracks, no boggy corners.
Built to Take a Beating
Our products are specified for heavy foot traffic. Used in schools, nurseries, and pub gardens — designed to last 15-20 years.
Pet-Friendly
Drains freely so liquid passes straight through. Solid waste lifts off easily. Zeolite infill treats any odour issues.
Safe for Children
Non-toxic, lead-free, tested to safety standards. Shock-absorbent underlay available for play areas.
Less Water, Fewer Chemicals
No regular watering, fertiliser, weed killer, or moss treatment needed. Better for your bills and the environment.
Long-Term Value
Over a ten-year period, the numbers tend to work out in favour of artificial grass once you factor in your time and supplies.
Kerb Appeal
A well-installed artificial lawn enhances your property’s look and can boost market appeal year-round.
How We Install Artificial Grass
A good-looking lawn starts with what’s underneath it. Here’s our proven process, step by step.
01
Site Survey & Measurements
We visit the property, measure the area, check ground conditions, and bring grass samples so you can see and feel the options.
02
Ground Preparation
Old turf and topsoil stripped back to around 75mm depth. We remove all spoil from site — skip hire is included in our quotes.
03
Sub-Base Installation
Compacted MOT Type 1 crushed stone followed by granite dust or sharp sand. Machine compacted for stability and drainage.
04
Weed Membrane
Permeable geotextile membrane laid over the base. Stops weeds from pushing through while allowing rainwater to drain.
05
Laying & Joining
Grass rolled out with pile facing your main viewing angle. Specialist adhesive and joining tape create invisible seams.
06
Edging & Finishing
Perimeter secured with galvanised steel pins or timber edging. Sand infill brushed in. Power brush lifts pile to full height.
Choose Your Perfect Grass
We supply and install grass in a range of pile heights, from short, dense options suited to front gardens, through to longer, cushioned varieties that work well for play areas and around pools.
Short Pile (20-25mm)
Dense and neat. Perfect for front gardens, patios, and areas where a manicured look is preferred.
Medium Pile (30-35mm)
Our most popular choice. Natural-looking lawn feel that suits most residential back gardens.
Long Pile (37-40mm)
Soft and luxurious. Ideal for play areas, around pools, and anywhere you want extra cushioning.
Pet-Friendly Range
Enhanced drainage and zeolite-compatible. Specifically designed for homes with dogs.
Simple Care for Year-Round Beauty
Very little, truthfully. With professional installation and the occasional bit of simple maintenance, you can keep your artificial lawn looking its best for 15 to 20 years.
Brush Regularly
Every few weeks with a stiff broom to keep fibres upright
Remove Leaves
Before they break down — a leaf blower makes quick work in autumn
Hose Down Occasionally
During summer to rinse off dust and cool the surface
Pet Waste Cleanup
Pick up promptly and rinse the area — that’s it

Common Questions About Artificial Grass
How long does installation take?
Most residential gardens are done in one to two days. A small front lawn might take half a day; a larger rear garden with groundwork challenges could stretch to three. We confirm the schedule in advance so you can plan around it.
Can you lay artificial grass on concrete or paving?
Yes. We install a foam underlay on hard surfaces to provide cushioning, drainage, and a more natural feel underfoot. It’s a common setup for balconies, patios, and roof terraces.
Is artificial grass safe for dogs?
It is. Our installations drain freely, so urine passes through rather than sitting on the surface. Solid waste is easy to pick up. For homes with multiple dogs or heavy use, we recommend a zeolite-based infill that actively breaks down ammonia and reduces odour over time.
Do I need planning permission?
In most cases, no. Artificial grass is considered a like-for-like replacement for a natural lawn and doesn’t typically require planning consent. However, if your property is listed or in a conservation area, it’s worth checking with your local authority first.
Will it fade in the sun?
All of the grass we supply is UV-stabilised. It won’t bleach or discolour under normal UK sunlight conditions. The manufacturers warrant against UV degradation for the life of the product.
How much does artificial grass installation cost?
As a rough guide, a fully installed artificial lawn in 2025/26 typically costs between £45 and £85 per square metre. That includes all groundwork, materials, waste removal, and fitting. For a 40 square metre rear garden — fairly typical for properties in our service areas — you’d be looking at somewhere between £1,800 and £3,400 for a full supply-and-fit installation.
