What Is Block Paving?
Block paving is a surface made up of individual bricks or blocks — typically concrete, clay, or natural stone — laid in interlocking patterns over a compacted sub-base. Each block slots against its neighbours, and kiln-dried sand is swept into the joints to lock everything together. The result is a surface that distributes weight evenly, resists cracking, and flexes slightly with the ground beneath it rather than splitting apart the way a poured concrete slab eventually does.
The blocks themselves come in a wide range of sizes, finishes, and colours — charcoal, grey, brindle, terracotta, silver — so you can match or contrast with your property’s brickwork. Pattern options include herringbone (the strongest layout for driveways where vehicles turn), stretcher bond for a more linear look, and basket weave or circular features for larger areas where you want a focal point.
“Really Impressed With the Whole Process”
“Really impressed with the whole process. They stripped out the old tarmac, laid proper foundations, and the finished driveway looks spot on. Clean, tidy, and done when they said it would be.”

Block Paving Materials
We supply concrete block paving, clay pavers, and natural stone including granite and limestone setts. Each material has its own character, price point, and practical advantages.
Concrete Block Paving
The most widely installed option in the UK. Available in standard, tumbled, and textured finishes with a broad range of colours.
Clay Block Paving
Kiln-fired with colour baked all the way through. Won’t fade over time. A strong choice for period properties or visible areas.
Natural Stone Setts
Granite, limestone, and sandstone. Virtually indestructible with unique character that manufactured blocks can’t replicate.
Permeable Paving
Meets SuDS requirements. No planning permission needed for front gardens over 5sqm. Looks almost identical to standard paving.
Why Block Paving Is the UK's Most Popular Choice
Lasts 20–25 Years
A properly installed block paving driveway gives you two decades of daily use without major intervention.
Simple Repairs
If a block cracks or sinks, you lift it out and drop a replacement in. No cutting, no resurfacing the whole drive.
Handles Heavy Loads
45-degree herringbone is approved for adopted roads and commercial car parks. Family cars are well within its capability.
Permeable Options
Permeable block paving sidesteps planning permission requirements entirely. Rainwater drains through the joints naturally.
Low Maintenance
A brush, a pressure wash once or twice a year, and topping up jointing sand. That’s genuinely the extent of it.
Design Flexibility
Dozens of colours, patterns, and materials. Feature circles, contrasting borders, and mixed-size setts for a bespoke look.
Better Lifetime Value
Block paving tends to work out cheaper over its lifetime than surfaces that look less expensive up front.
Adds Property Value
A well-laid driveway signals a property has been looked after and can meaningfully influence how quickly a house sells.
Family-Run. No Shortcuts. No Subcontractors.
Urban Stone Developments has been installing block paving driveways since 2008. We’re a family-run business — not a franchise, not a lead-generation website that sells your details on. Our own teams carry out every installation across London, Berkshire, Surrey, Kent, Essex, and Hertfordshire.
We show up, we do the work, and we answer the phone if you have a question six months later. We bring sample boards to every site visit so you can see real blocks against your brickwork, not just a photo on a screen.
How We Install a Block Paving Driveway
The finished surface is the bit everyone sees, but the work that matters most happens underneath it. A block paving driveway is only as good as its base.
01
Site Visit & Design
We measure the area, assess ground conditions, and bring sample boards showing different block types, colours, and patterns. Written quote within 48 hours.
02
Excavation & Preparation
We excavate to the correct depth — usually 200mm to 250mm. All spoil removed from site; skip hire is included in our quotes.
03
Edge Restraints & Sub-Base
Rigid edge restraints installed around the full perimeter. MOT Type 1 crushed stone compacted in stages using a vibrating plate compactor.
04
Sand Screed Layer
Sharp sand levelled to a consistent depth on top of the Type 1, graded to fall toward the drainage point. Ready for the blocks.
05
Laying the Blocks
Blocks laid by hand to the agreed pattern. String lines and straight edges throughout. Diamond-blade saw for clean, tight cuts.
06
Jointing & Compaction
Kiln-dried sand swept into joints and vibrated with a plate compactor. Final inspection completed. Ready to drive on immediately.
Choose Your Perfect Pattern
The pattern you choose isn’t just about appearance — it affects the structural performance of the driveway too. We design patterns during the consultation stage and can mock them up on paper so you know what to expect.
Herringbone (45-Degree)
The industry standard for driveways. Blocks interlock at 45 degrees, creating the strongest surface that resists lateral movement under turning wheels.
Stretcher Bond
Blocks laid end to end in staggered rows. Clean, modern, linear appearance. Works well on driveways where cars are driven straight on and off.
Basket Weave & Feature Patterns
Traditional look for older properties. Feature circles, fan patterns, and mixed-material borders for larger areas where you want a focal point.
How to Maintain a Block Paving Driveway
Block paving is low-maintenance, but it’s not zero-maintenance. Here’s what will keep it looking sharp for the long haul.
Sweep Regularly
Prevent organic matter building up in the joints — leaves and moss are the main culprits
Pressure Wash Yearly
Use a fan nozzle rather than a pencil jet, which can blast out the jointing sand
Top Up Jointing Sand
The single most important maintenance task — without sand in the joints, blocks can shift under load
Treat Weeds & Spills
Path weed killer in spring and autumn. Clean oil spills promptly with a degreaser

Common Questions About Block Paving
How long does a block paving driveway take to install?
A standard double driveway of 40 to 50 square metres typically takes three to five working days, including excavation, sub-base installation, and block laying. Smaller single-car drives can be completed in two days. Complex designs, larger areas, or sites with difficult access may take up to a week. We confirm the timeline in your quote.
Is block paving better than tarmac?
Tarmac is cheaper to install and quicker to lay, but it has a shorter lifespan (10 to 15 years), it can’t be repaired in sections, and it offers no design flexibility. Block paving costs more up front but lasts 20 to 25 years, can be lifted and relaid if needed, and gives you a wide range of colour and pattern choices. For most homeowners, block paving offers better value over the life of the driveway.
Can block paving be laid over an existing concrete base?
Sometimes. If the existing concrete is in good condition — level, stable, and draining adequately — blocks can be laid on a sand screed directly over the top. But if the concrete is cracked, uneven, or poorly drained, it’s better to remove it and start with a proper sub-base. We assess this during the site survey and will always recommend the approach that gives the best long-term result.
What's the best block paving pattern for a driveway?
Herringbone at 45 degrees. It’s the strongest pattern for areas with vehicle traffic because the interlock prevents blocks from shifting under load. Stretcher bond and basket weave are fine for patios and paths, but for a driveway that’s going to have cars driving and turning on it daily, herringbone is the right choice.
Will weeds grow through block paving?
Weeds don’t grow up through the blocks — the weed membrane beneath the sub-base prevents that. What does happen over time is that wind-blown seeds settle in the sand joints and germinate. Regular sweeping, occasional weed treatment, and keeping the joints topped up with sand keeps this under control. It’s a minor maintenance task, not a structural problem.
Does block paving add value to a property?
Estate agents consistently cite front-of-house improvements as one of the strongest ways to influence buyer perception. A well-laid driveway in good condition signals that a property has been looked after. It won’t add tens of thousands, but it can meaningfully influence how quickly a house sells and at what price.
Do I need planning permission for a block paving driveway?
In most cases, no. Since October 2008, if you’re paving over more than five square metres of front garden with a non-permeable surface and the rainwater runs off onto the public highway, you’ll need planning permission. Using permeable block paving or directing runoff into a soakaway keeps you within permitted development rights. We assess drainage and planning requirements at the site survey stage.
How much does a dropped kerb cost?
Dropped kerb costs vary by council but typically range from £800 to £2,000 including the application fee and physical works. It’s a separate process from the driveway installation itself, carried out by or on behalf of the local highway authority. We can advise on the process and help coordinate timing so the crossover is ready when we need it.
