More Than Just Cutting Grass
Landscaping is really the art — and, let’s be honest, a fair bit of science — of shaping outdoor spaces so they actually work for the people using them. It goes well beyond planting a few shrubs or laying some turf. Done properly, it’s about creating a genuine sense of harmony between your home and its surroundings, whilst making practical use of every square metre you’ve got.
Most garden projects involve two distinct elements: hard landscaping and soft landscaping. Getting the balance right between those two things is what separates a garden that looks lovely for a season from one that stays attractive and manageable for years to come.
The Living Elements of Your Garden
Soft landscaping is what brings your garden to life — colour, texture, the seasonal shifts that give you something new to enjoy throughout the year. Spring bulbs and blossom, summer perennials in full bloom, rich autumn foliage, and the structural beauty of evergreens through winter.
Premium Turfing & Seeding
Lush, hard-wearing lawns laid from premium turf or established from seed — whichever suits your site and budget best.
Trees, Shrubs & Planting
Strategic planting schemes designed for year-round interest, chosen to thrive in your specific soil and aspect.
Hedges & Borders
Natural privacy and structure through carefully selected hedging and border planting that frames your garden beautifully.
Wildflower & Meadow Areas
Natural wildflower meadows and pollinator-friendly areas that benefit local wildlife and look stunning.
Structure, Shape & Functionality
Hard landscaping provides the bones of your garden — the structural elements that give it shape and create practical surfaces for living, dining and entertaining outdoors. These are the features that define how your space actually works day to day.
Patios & Terraces
Natural stone or porcelain — expertly laid with proper drainage and falls.
Paths & Walkways
Practical, attractive routes through your garden that connect spaces logically.
Retaining Walls
Structural and decorative stone walls for level changes and garden definition.
Steps & Level Changes
Elegant solutions for sloping sites, creating usable terraced areas.
Decking & Platforms
Raised timber or composite decking for contemporary outdoor living areas.
A Family Business, Built on Trust
We started Urban Stone Developments back in 2008 — just a small, family-run outfit with a genuine passion for outdoor spaces and a stubborn belief that quality work speaks for itself.
Fifteen-odd years on, that hasn’t changed much. We’re still family-run, still hands-on with every project, and still unreasonably fussy about getting the details right. The difference is we’ve now got well over a decade of experience behind us — hundreds of gardens across Berkshire, London, Hertfordshire, Kent, Surrey and the surrounding counties.
What drives us is fairly simple, really. We love seeing a tired, unloved garden become somewhere a family actually wants to spend their weekends. That first barbecue on a new patio, kids running around on fresh turf, or just a homeowner standing at the back door with a cup of tea, thinking “yeah, that looks brilliant.” That never gets old.
We treat every property like it’s our own. No subcontracting, no cutting corners, no disappearing halfway through a job. Just honest work, fair pricing, and the kind of personal attention you only get from people who genuinely care about what they do.
Why Invest in Professional Landscaping?
Enhanced Kerb Appeal
A thoughtfully designed front garden creates a striking first impression and genuinely sets your property apart from the neighbours. Carefully selected paving, borders and planting transform a neglected frontage into something you’re properly proud of.
Optimised Outdoor Living
Defined zones for dining, entertaining, relaxing and play — turning your garden into a genuine extension of your home. A properly laid patio with good drainage stays usable after rain, and screening provides privacy for outdoor meals.
Increased Property Value
Estate agents consistently flag outdoor space as a significant factor in property valuations. A garden that looks good and functions well can be what secures a sale at asking price — making landscaping a genuinely smart investment.
Year-Round Enjoyment
We design gardens that offer something in every season. Spring bulbs, summer perennials, autumn colour, winter structure. Combine that with decent lighting and your garden gives you visual interest even when you’re not outside using it.
Reduced Maintenance
Smart design choices and quality installation reduce ongoing upkeep. Replacing struggling lawns with paving, choosing plants that thrive in your conditions, proper drainage — all of it means less hassle for you long term.
Environmental Benefits
Permeable paving for drainage, native planting for pollinators, rainwater harvesting systems — sustainable features that benefit your property and the wider ecosystem without significant extra cost.
“We honestly weren’t sure what to expect — we’d never had any serious garden work done before. But the team at Urban Stone made the whole thing painless. They listened to what we wanted, suggested things we hadn’t even thought of, and the result is just… we use the garden every single day now. The kids love it. We love it. Best thing we’ve done to the house.”

What Does Landscaping Cost?

From around £50–80 per square metre
Mixed Hard & Soft
Typically £80–100 per square metre
Premium & Complex
Can exceed £150 per square metre

Frequently Asked Questions
What areas do you cover for landscaping?
We work throughout Berkshire, London, Hertfordshire, Kent, Surrey, Sussex, Essex and surrounding areas. Not sure if we cover your location? Just drop us a line — we’re often happy to take on projects a little further afield if the project is right.
How long does a typical landscaping project take?
It really depends on the scope. A straightforward patio or basic garden makeover might take 1–2 weeks. Larger, more complex transformations — the kind involving structural elements, drainage, multiple planting areas — can run to 4–8 weeks or longer. Weather plays a role too, particularly with concreting and turfing. We’ll give you a realistic timeline during consultation and keep you properly updated throughout.
How much does professional landscaping cost?
Costs vary quite a bit depending on what you’re after, the area involved, your material choices and existing site conditions. As a rough guide: basic landscaping starts from around £50–80 per square metre, projects mixing hard and soft landscaping typically sit between £80–100 per square metre, and premium designs with high-end materials can exceed £150 per square metre. Individual elements vary too — patios run £800–£2,000, fencing about £100–£120 per metre installed, decking £70–£130 per square metre. The most reliable way to get a proper figure is a free consultation.
Do you offer garden maintenance after the project is finished?
We do, yes. We offer flexible maintenance packages tailored to your garden’s specific needs — from regular lawn care and seasonal planting through to comprehensive grounds maintenance. It’s entirely optional, but many of our clients find it helpful to have us keep things looking their best, especially in that critical first year after installation.
Will I need planning permission for garden landscaping?
Most garden landscaping doesn’t require planning permission, but there are a few exceptions worth knowing about. Converting front gardens to hard standing has specific requirements around permeable surfaces and drainage. Decking raised more than 30cm above ground level may need approval. Conservation areas have additional restrictions, and fencing over 2 metres (or 1 metre next to a highway) typically needs permission. We’ll advise on all of this during your consultation and can help with applications if they’re needed.
